Quick very random question to my brilliant readers

Is there an easy way to create music with a Mac? I'm not looking for Garageband, I just want to play notes of specific lengths in a specific sequence. Something I could control algorithmically and save to MIDI would be ideal.

MIDI.pm

Not that I've used it, but MIDI is a pretty straightforward format, so it probably works.
