Hey you people what read my journal:
If you have ever seen the movie "Yellow Submarine" then you need to go read the story I received for Yuletide, "(How Does It Feel To Be) One of the Beautiful People" at http://archiveofourown.org/works/299072 right now. It's a glimpse into the early history of Pepperland, including the motivations of the founders and the first defense against the Meanies. And it's also a sweet look at a character who both is and isn't an original character. So go read it!

I am likely to be away from the Internet tomorrow. If so, I will be back on sometime on Monday.

Thanks, person who

requests "Any", but then uses the optional details to specify characters in a limiting way, or to ask for characters that weren't nominated

for making life significantly more difficult for people who don't abuse the system and like more abstract fandoms and/or legitimately aren't picky.

I once had a fellow at the BNA baggage check offer to fight me for my hat. The escalator at Alewife this morning was less polite about it, but I was victorious and remain in possession.

If you're on LJ, you just saw my post
from yesterday. The shopping that we did
was Saturday and Friday's task.
         That's that.
On Sunday we went uptown. We had thought
that we would hit museums, plural. But
we walked from our hotel on 29th
on up to MoMA (5th and 54th)
and after MoMA we were pretty tired.
(And MoMA's awesome. Lots of neat, neat stuff.)
So we had lunch and went to Central Park.
We hung out for a bit in Central Park,
then took the subway back to our hotel.
We rested, then went down to Union Square
to see a movie (Hanna) and then dined
on sushi. Then we took a cab back here.

Today we have a bus back home at 6.
We have a lunch date, but no other plans;
I'll fill you in tomorrow. See you then!

I'm writing from Manhattan, NYC,
where [profile] lumpybeast and I are spending time
to start her April break. I'm taking Monday off,
and took off half of Friday, so a bit
of time. So far, we've mostly shopped (as well
as eating: everything we've had was great).
On Friday, it was books: we hit the Strand
where she bought YA books and I acquired
a couple Latin books. Then yesterday
we went to Brooklyn, going to Re/Dress,
an awesome plus-size vintage clothing store.
While we were checking out, the cashier said
that down the street we'd find LeeLee's Valise,
a nice boutique for plus-sized girls, so off
we went (with stop for lunch, which was
crab hash and salmon Benedict (!)) to there,
where Lumpybeast had very happy times
and bought a couple dresses. I went to
a nearby bookstore and picked up a book.
Then back onto the subway to the stores
of Herald Square. We shopped a little more
and went through Macy's, then to base.
Last night it started raining very hard
so we ran out for take-out sandwiches
and had a picnic on our king-size bed.

Today we do museums. Off we go.

Pizza Days (our local late-night pizza chain) just sent me the following email coupon:

FREE!

PIZZA DAYS SOCKS
WHIT ANY PIZZA
ORDERS

PLESE MENTION THE COUPON
WHEN YOU ORDER

Unfortunately, I don't expect to order pizza at 1 am anytime this year. But the coupon's undated, so maybe I can get socks in January. Because hey, free socks.

I have had multiple people express some confusion over this "Yuletide" thing I'm doing, and while there are FAQs at the Yuletide site, they're more focused on participants. So here's a quick info dump for bystanders.

(Those who know more about Yuletide than me, please let me know if I've said something inaccurate or misleading.)
More info )

tl,dr: Yuletide is for odd fanfic; please don't talk about what people may be writing until New Year's Day.

Times in my previous 2 posts are in Mountain time. So "our" hour starts at 5:00 east coast time.

Apparently the Coverthon (see previous posts) will be at http://coverville.com/live/ from tomorrow noon to Saturday noon.

My crazy idea is a go! We're sponsoring the 3-4pm hour on Friday, featuring Scott Johnson. The host, Brian Ibbott, is putting us there because it should be a popular hour. Thanks to my 4 co-sponsors! I don't know the streaming details, but I'll post them when I have them.

Hi! This is my first Yuletide, after being inspired during Madness with Revolver last year. Thank you for writing a story for me!

So, there's a podcast, Coverville, that plays cover songs. I've been listening to it for a number of years, and it's a pretty popular podcast. In a couple of weeks, they're doing a 24-hour coverthon, a half-fundraiser/half-benefit. They're offering hourly sponsorships, which give the sponsor the chance to have their business mentioned multiple times in the hour, and have a logo up on the stream.

My crazy idea is to have one of these hours be sponsored by the letter R and the number 7, as if it were an episode of Sesame Street. We'll be essentially anonymous to the show's listeners.

It'll cost some money (the total for a sponsorship is $150), but I can put up a lot of it, and I have at least one co-conspirator.

Anyway, let me know, by comment, email, or private message, if you want to be part of this. Or if you have any questions.

I just finished reading the Etymologies of St. Isidore, which I started in the summer of 2004. I still have more fun bits to post, but in case I don't get to it, here's what he says about the beet:

Beta apud nos oleris genus; apud Graecos littera.

The beta (beet) is among us a type of vegetable; among the Greeks it is a letter.

(XVII, x, 15)

It will be odd to leave for work on Monday without Isidore in my satchel.

(ETA reference)

Whoa.

Squid can fly.

Not that far, mind you. And it doesn't happen often. But that's probably what they said about the ancestors of Archeopteryx.
