Got my Job Call and my Employment Gun right here...

So I'm now hunting for a job. I'm astounded by how difficult I find it to write a cover letter. This is a page of text, at most. It just has to say "Hi, you have a job and I need one, here's why I'm your guy." Why do I find it hard to even get past "To Whom it May Concern"? I know I just need to suck it up, and get it done, but it's odd that I have this block.

I think it's pretty universal; everyone I know hates writing them (not that this helps you get past "To Whom It May Concern"...).

I feel your pain

I spent hours in raging crying fits over my cover letters. Ask Tahnan. I hate them with a burning hate of a thousand blazing suns.

Sometimes it helps to get a name to put at the top. Go to the web site and get the VP of HR's name to fill in. That always made me feel sneaky and smart, which helped me get over the wall. Of course, since I worked HR, I know it doesn't really help put a resume on the top of the pile but it made me feel better....

Good luck.

To whom it may concern: I want you to employ me. My skills speak for themselves. I await your generous offer. Sincerely, cnoocy.

Your skills are amazing. How about $1.2 million per year, 5 weeks vacation, use of our beach house on the Vinyard, weekly massages, and free Cokes? We hope that the 5 minute walk to our offices is not too far for you, but we can arrange a car service for you if it is.

Please, please, please say you will join us!

Love,
Acme Corp, USA

I feel for you. I've only had to write a cover letter once really (though I reused it for a couple applications, with the necessary modifications of course), but boy did it suck ;)
